Teaching Assistants Cuts
On 2nd June 2013 The Sunday Times published details of secret coalition talks, led by the Education Secretary, Michael Gove, aimed at axing 230,000 classroom assistants to save money. GMB passed an emergency congress motion on this threat and has since launched a full campaign to defend our teaching assistant members.
The Tories have sought to undermine the work of TAs for the last decade, with Michael Gove insultingly referring our members as a ‘mum’s army’. Of course this is complete nonsense, classroom support staff are vital professionals in the modern school environment, and should be recognised as such.
We in GMB know the difference Teaching Assistants make every single day. Whether it’s supporting a teacher, helping a child, or working with the most vulnerable students, TA’s make our schools better places.
GMB Organisers are currently visiting schools to make staff and parents aware of the threat and to ask them to sign a petition against the proposals. There has been huge support for teaching assistants, with thousands of people already having signed our petition. You can see pictures from some of our visits above.
